I used to be one, myself. That said, it was the Canadian version, so not really a good reflection of Republican politics.

I'm as curious as Blue Edwards was regarding liberalism ... what makes you decide to vote Republican?

I am curious as well.

Is it because you believe Bush and his admin are the right guys for the job, or do vote based on an agenda that the republicans tend to believe: anti-abortion, anti-drug, etc.

For me, Republicans support:

- Less government programs
- Economic policy is more business-friendly
- Lower taxes
- A President who conducts himself with dignity and respect
- Tort Reform
- Strong National Defense
- Upgrading quality of Education

These are some of the basic reasons I am a Republican and they happen to be aligned with the conservative view.

FOUR MORE YEARS!

I echo a lot of kwalder's reasons.

At this point in my life. I want less government programs, privatized social security, and lower taxes. I want a President who is willing to take stand and stick up for what he believes. I want a Strong National Defense (Especially now with all of the terrorism).

I believe that the US is helping the world by ridding it of terrorism and evil.

I also am a christian and believe that conservatives hold more christian beliefs than liberals.

Here's a big one - I believe in holding people responsible for their actions instead of blaming society. I believ in making your breaks instead of relying on others to give me things.

That's a few. I'll think of more later.

xpanda, ive never liked labels because it is a way to keep us divided. sometimes, once people are labeled "liberal or conservate" they dont feel they need to understand the complexities of the issues so they just follow along with the other sheeple and believe in the party line.

am i liberal or conservative?

i believe in a flat tax
im against the death penalty but let the states decide
teacher's unions and the national education association are ruining public schools
the minimum wage should be increased and added with cost of living adjustments each year.
welfare should be abolished.
social security should be privatized
our drug policy is run by "right wing" fringe groups that are stressing our prison and legal systems to the max. one of my biggest issues is stop incarcerating non violent criminals as they make up 2 thirds of are prison population right now.

the greatest things these scumbag political parties can do is make you into a puppet where you just mimic the party line because they love having control of the base. then they can just focus on the swing voters.

for instance republicans love to stay that "we are the party of less government, lower taxes and a stronger national defense.

so if im not a republican, i believe in bigger government, higher taxes, and a weak defense. that is proposterous.

democrats say they are the party for diversity , the environment, and a fair tax system. which is equally misleading.

trust me, disagree with a liberal and see how much they are the party of diversity. i think affirmative action, and calling someone african american or jewish american just leads to more diversity, not less.

the only person i could have voted for in 2000 was john mccain, and now im without a candidate again, so i will have to wait 4 more years.

vote for the man, not the party

Awesome response. Your politics are clearly personal, not partisan, which is refreshing around here.

I'm all for raising minimum wage to!

In fact, let's raise everyone's wage about $13 an hour......I think we can all agree on that one!

My number one reason is the abortion issue. Secondly, immigration reform which Bush is not doing a good job of. He is just pandering to the Latinos.

Thirdly, less taxes and less social programs. Let me decide if I want to give my money to some 25 year old that can work but will not.

Fourth, the gay issue. I am totally against gay marriage.

I also believe in a flat tax.

The term conservative, is similar to liberal in that our political definitons are not textbook.

For example, republicans are the small government party..which is where I prefer them to the democrats. However they are only really less intrusive fiscally...which I am in favor for. I hate welfare, affirmitave action, and I think if we were truly a free market capitalism, the privatizing social security, droping the minimum wage and other things could work well. But that is Idealism.

However, conservatives are increasing the ssize of government when it comes to needless laws. (The war on drugs, prostitition, gambling, defining marriage et al)

They also spend WAY to much in the pentagon budget in my opinion.

I wish more conservatives would worry less about the personal vices, or actions of others that dont harm anyone (Homosexuality, pot use), and vote for the real small government party. The liberterian one.

Being conservative begins with the indivdual and personal responibilty, and self discipline.
To which I have much room to improve...but I'm working on it....which is the whole point, its the direction in which society should set the tone for, a lot of what you are is what you were taught inside and outside your home.
Liberals say if it feels good do it.
A consevative will say If it feels good you can do it and you can pay for it.
Ther are people with AIDs in hospitals right now that don't have any insurance..that suck the hospitals dry due to their iresponible behavior...thats because society says its OK.
Their are inner city kids that are suffering from gunshot wounds (theaverage is about 50K a pop)that suck insurane and hospitals dry...because society has said its OK...keep doing what your doing sombedy else will pay.

Being conservative means society goal is to smartin up not dumb down....Set the tone that life is better than abortion, that individual ideas are way better than goverments....I am pro choice, I just think the emphises should be the right choice.

in my opinion, to assume that all liberals think a certain way or all conservatives think a certain way is not accurate. obviously, most liberals view most issues similarly and the same with most conservatives...otherwise there would not be the two distinctions.

i agree with some of the things brought up by other "conservative" posters in this thread. in the thread i started about "why are you liberal" seems like a consistent theme was a compassion for other people.

i feel that i have compassion for my fellow man. my compassion manifests itself in personal acts of service and giving that i do in my community. it seems to me (and i do not think i speak for all conservatives by the way) that the conservative idea of compassion, by those who have compassion, is one of individual responsibility rather than societal responsibility.

for example, i personally feel that, while needed in certain cases, by and large the welfare system in this country is ridiculously abused. however, i personally have given money to charities that i know support single mothers who have trouble feeding their children.

it seems most liberals feel that conservatives have no compassion for anyone and only care about making the rich richer. well, i can't speak for every conservative out there but, the poverty in other countries (and to some degree in this country) is heartbreaking to me. i support my local church and other charities which help impoverished people. i post that not to blow my own horn but to show that a person who is very conservative does have a heart towards the poor.

while the "compassion" issue was the most common raised in my thread, i do not believe that all liberals have the kind of compassion that was talked about by the r/x liberals. just like not all conservatives are heartless, money-grabbers; not all liberals spend there time trying to right the wrongs of our society. there are some liberals out there with a clear agenda that has little or nothing to do with their compassion for their fellow man.

as far as my stance on the issues, i am:

- pro-life
- for lower taxes
- for smaller govt
- pro-business
- for moral absolutes
- of the opinion that the social programs we have need a complete overhaul
- of the opinion that God has been relegated to the margins of our society by the liberals who have been in power...and that that is a bad thing

my feeling on the above issues results in my conservative voting.

do i think that the conservative congressmen and/or president bush are flawless...no, i don't. and for the record, while i support president bush and will vote for him in november, i do think he made some mistakes in the iraq situation.

Patriot - That is the best way to describe liberals and conservatives that I have ever heard.
ok.gif

Liberals say, if it feels good do it and let someone else worry about it.
Consevatives say, if it feels good you can do it and you can pay for it.

I guess that is why I am a conservative....I was brought up to be responsible for my own actions.

It is important for people to stand up to what is right and just regardless of whether it is 'liberal' or 'conservative'.

I consider myself a true conservative. Not once in the 17 years i have been able to legally vote, have i voted for anyone other than a republican. If i didn't like a republican on the ballot i left the ballot blank. The first issue that is dearest to me as a conservative is the idea of smaller government. Here i have a big problem with the current president. Big brother is out to get you. I don't want to get into specific experiences i have had with our government since Bush was elected but i have been harrased by more than one federal bureau. Do they have anything on me? No they do not, but do they have the common decency to tell me i'm no longer under investigation? No they do not, i have had to contact them to find out. Nothing in my life has scared me as much as being called into their offices and being grilled like a piece of meat. How about being read my rights, hell i thought i was on my way to jail. I was just sitting there trying to figure out what in the hell they would actually charge me for. Federal investigators along with prosecutors are out on a witch hunt right now and harrassing U.S citizens in the process. I have seen this first hand. The process has been set in motion by the the people occupying the white house. What will i vote come November? As much as it saddens me and contradicts everything i thought i believed in. My vote will be for Kerry.

omg gambling, im so sorry for your situation

without going into specifics can you tell me abit more tho. i dont want to sound heartless but everyone has a way of spinning a story for their own benefit and i always like to know the facts before making a decision.

i do believe that our civil liberties are being attacked on a daily basis but if you have nothing to hide what are you nervous about? (have you heard that before?)

i can see your upset with everything that is going on but plz help us understand what is happening to you. we need to know because the information might help us avoid a similiar situation or get us pissed off enough that we will try to do something.

sorry again gambling for you plight, it just appears too convenient for you to start voting democrat based on an experience that a true conversative would understand as part of the greater good. im not trying to be a prick but i need to know more

Congrats blue and xpanda for starting these great threads! There's nothing more enjoyable on these boards IMO than discussing the major issues of life without flames and negative emotions.

Patriot's comments sum it up nicely I would say. My take is that liberals see the world as "one world, one people" whereas conservatives see different groups of people as being fundamentally different in a permanent way.

If I were living in the US, I would be conservative for sure. This is because the major threats to US national security are fellow humans who see things in a markedly different way and would like to change the world to their benefit and America's detriment.

Like it or not, admit it or not, humans are divided into groups who are at war with one another. The one world, one people concept will never flourish because the "man vs. man" conflict is more acute and more directly related to too many people's survival than the "man vs. some other threat" conflict.

There are enemies out there with boxing gloves on waiting to take us down. Conservatives are training hard for the fight while liberals want to use the media to convince the enemy to take off the gloves and be our friend. The enemies are saying they will be our friend if we change our lifestyle dramatically. The conservatives say no way Jose, let's duke it out. The liberals are saying we won't change our lifestyle but look at the advantages of just being friendly. Isn't it nice? At the moment the enemies are saying no, your kind of "friendliness" is not nice, prepare to be hit in the head. The liberals are saying "here, let my grandmother make you some fudge brownies", what do you think of being friendly now? The enemy: "mmm, thanks, they are delicious but...KABOOOM!!!"

Well, that's the gist of how I see it anyway.
